AB 1157 Narrowly Passes Assembly Housing with Promises of Stakeholder Engagement & Likelihood of Amendments
AB 1157 (Kalra), the bill that would lower the statewide rent cap, passed out of the Assembly Housing Committee today on a 7-5 vote, with key democrats voting no. Other democrats expressed several concerns with the bill but voted in favor, citing today’s hearing as the first committee stop in the process, indicating they expect amendment discussions in other committees. The bill would also remove the existing single-family home exemption in the Tenant Protection Act and make the law permanent. SCRHA would like to thank the hundreds of members who sent emails and/or called members of the committee to express their opposition. While the bill cleared this first hurdle, your voice made a difference! SCRHA will continue to fight back against this threatening legislation and provide updates in the near future.
