SCRHA Voter Guide – Make Your Voice Heard on Nov. 5
The election is only days away. The rental housing industry is facing a major threat in the form of Prop. 33 which, if passed, would repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, and allow rent control to flourish across the state. This also means it is vital to elect candidates to state and local offices who understand the challenges the industry faces, especially in the form of additional regulation.

SD Council Committee Approves Regulating Software
On Wednesday, October 30, the San Diego City Council Rules Committee moved forward an item to address the use of algorithms in property management software. SCRHA opposed the item and asked that the committee take no action until stakeholders were consulted. There is little data to suggest that these programs are impacting rental rates in San Diego. Furthermore, the action does nothing to address the root causes of the city's housing crisis. The misunderstanding of these technologies is clear. Removing these tools won't fix the housing crisis; it will only create new challenges for those working to provide quality rental housing. Reminder: New Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm Requirements for HUD/Section 8 Effective December 1, 2024
All rental units receiving Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher or Project-Based Voucher rental assistance are required to have carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms that meet new federal standards. Click here for more information.
