New Law Alert: Governor Newsom Signs AB 2559
Governor Gavin Newsome signed AB 2559 by Assemblymember Chris Ward into law today. The bill creates a process for acceptance by a rental housing provider of a "reusable tenant screening report." The bill will go into effect on January 1, 2023.
When first drafted, it was unclear if the bill would require housing providers to accept reusable screening reports. Through our advocacy efforts, the author amended the bill and clarified that AB 2559 is voluntary. The amendments eliminated notice requirements on the part of the owner/manager as well. Housing providers who choose to accept reusable reports will not be able to charge the applicant a fee for the owner/manager to access the report or an application screening fee.
Southern California Rental Housing Association will keep you updated on how this affects your operations. A white paper will soon be available for SCRHA Members. Click here to read the bill. If you haven't already, click here to sign up for future Action Alerts.
