San Diego Council Committee Hears Trash Related Proposals
The San Diego City Council Environment Committee was scheduled to receive a presentation today on solid waste pick up fees and schedule a future public hearing date. At the time of writing this, that item was still being discussed. However, prior to that presentation, committee members voted to move forward with the creation of an ordinance to "Protect Customers from Unfair Costs and Fees for City-provided Utility Services." SCRHA testified on the proposal urging a robust stakeholder process to ensure that rental housing providers can pass along waste pick up costs fairly and continue to use third party services for utility billing. No specific language has been presented but the proposal from Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera seeks to protect commercial and residential tenants from being overcharged for city-provided utilities, including trash, water, and sewer. SCRHA will remain actively engaged and provide updates to members as the issue evolves. The city continues to host open houses and provide community presentations on the future of trash pick-up.
